{diy: braided hex nut bracelet}

I'm always up for a good DIY project...especially one that results in a fun piece of jewelry!

I was so excited when I stumbled upon this braided bracelet DIY, and I can't wait to wear it this week.  I love the design, and the brass hex nuts surprisingly add a perfect sparkly touch to this handmade bracelet. :)

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do, and you can find the full instructions here.  Have fun!

{our family addition}

It's true, Forrest and I are adding to our little family!  Exciting news, I know, but don't jump to any swift conclusions.  I'm sure this title sparks great interest, and I'm willing to bet the obvious assumption from most of you is that we're adding a new baby to our family...Well, you're right {sort of}!!!

We do have a new baby in the Beverly Family....A baby "CHICK", that is!!! :)
Here's the story about how "Bernie" became a Beverly...

It all began on December 10, 2010...It was an ordinary evening in the Beverly household {or so we thought}.  Forrest and I had just finished eating dinner, and we made our way to the couch to relax and watch a movie.  The doorbell rang not long after the movie started, and we both jumped up to chat with one of our neighbors who stopped by for a visit.  We were having a nice, pleasant conversation when, all of a sudden, this big, white bird started flapping and fluttering around in our Christmas wreath that was hanging on the front door.  I quickly slammed the door in our poor neighbor's face so this "bird" couldn't fly into the house, and we walked around to the side door to finish our conversation.  At this point, there wasn't much talking going on because we were all in shock and a bit stunned by this crazy creature that 1) was IN our wreath, 2) tried to attack us, and 3) almost flew into our house.  Forrest and I spent the next few minutes {still in shock} staring out the window at this bird that was now "nesting" on top of our beautiful Christmas wreath.

{bernie's nest}
The whole situation baffled us...Where in the world did this chicken come from, and how did he make his way to our wreath?  We thought "Maybe he wandered over from someone else's property"?  No way...We live in a large neighborhood in the city limits {far from any farms}, and there are no chickens to be found anywhere near our house.  We couldn't come up with a logical explanation, and we finally peeled ourselves from the window and decided to call it a night.  We closed the blinds, turned off the porch lights, and left Bernie {who was nameless at this point} asleep on the wreath.  We figured he {or she} would be long gone before the sun came up.

Well, we awoke bright and early to find this little chicken wandering around our front porch, just pecking away in the pine straw.  We were pretty surprised he was still there, but we thought for sure he'd be gone by the next day.  Wrong again!!

{exploring his territory}
Days turned into weeks, and we started getting used to having this chicken waddling around our yard during the day and sleeping on our wreath at night.  I actually became quite fond of the little furball {and I think Forrest did too :)}, and I was shocked when Christmas day rolled around and he was STILL with us.  On Christmas morning, I remember seeing a present under our tree to me from "Bernie"...When I asked Forrest who in the heck Bernie was, he nonchalantly replied, "Katherine, that's our chicken!"  Yep...Our chicken friend now had a name, and from that moment on, we knew that little Bernie was here to stay.

{bernie taking over the front porch}
Once I accepted the fact that Bernie would be a permanent staple at the Beverly household, I started doing some research on raising and caring for chickens.  Since I grew up with little pet dogs, this chicken business was new territory for me! :) After finishing all my online research, we have decided to build a little coop for Bernie, and we now make trips to the feed store rather than giving him scraps from our kitchen.  Our mornings are much more interesting these days, and I start each day tending to a chicken in addition to my black lab...I never thought I would say that!  Bernie seems happy and healthy, and I must admit that we do love our new pet.

{bernie's morning feeding}
It has almost been three months now since Bernie decided to make our wreath his home, and he's come a long way since that night...Bernie is now FAMOUS in our area, and he has become the topic of conversation throughout the state...He was on the front page of the newspaper, and the local news station recently contacted me about doing a story on him as well.  Who would have guessed that this mysterious chicken would generate such a buzz??

I'll continue to keep you updated on little Bernie, and I'll definitely let you know when he makes his TV debut!  If you're ever in the area, drop by the Beverly household for a visit...I'm sure Bernie will greet you at the door and give you a warm welcome! :)

{valentine's day traditions}

Valentine's Day in the Beverly Household consists of various traditions that originated many years ago, and these traditions have become our February 14th rituals.  Although I love all things pink, red, and heart-related, my husband {naturally} leans more toward the simple approach to this holiday of love.

Since we both share a passion for cooking, that is how we celebrate our day.  After years of fighting the rush at crowded restaurants to get a good meal on Valentine's Day, we decided one night to stay in and cook for each other.  We enjoyed a delicious meal of filet and lobster, and we had such a great time talking, laughing, and relaxing in the comfort of our own home.  Now we spend every Valentine's Day eating breakfast in bed and cooking our traditional filet and lobster dish for dinner, and we look forward to it every year.

Here are some savory things that I'll be indulging in with my Valentine...

{singing in the rain}

We have been on a weather roller coaster, and this new year started off with fluffy snow, followed by a bit of sleet, and now rain showers galore!  I have yet to see the sun peek through the clouds this week, and I'm very anxiously awaiting the arrival of warm, summer nights and clear, blue skies.

In the meantime, I think I'll embrace the rain and the beauty it brings...There's something lovely about the way the street looks when it's just rained, and rainbows make it all worthwhile...

Here are a few fun things for playing in the rain and cuddling up afterward...

{fonts & fun designs}

I have always been a sucker for cool color combinations that pop and flirty, fun fonts that catch the eye. I love designing inspiration boards of my fave finds along the way, and I've experimented with lots {and lots} of my different collections throughout the process of my blog design.

After playing around with various designs, I finally decided on this color cue to set the tone. I was instantly drawn to each of these colors, and together they make for a perfectly clean and modern palette that is just my style.
I stumbled upon this fun dining room design at Live Creating Yourself, and the splashes of teals and reds really appealed to my design senses. I used these colors to design various backgrounds, and here's a little glimpse of my collection...
I love all of these fresh designs, and I'm looking forward to creating many more beauties inspired by  fabulous colors.

Now let's talk {fonts}...I love, love, LOVE fonts and fun graphics, and I could literally spend all day experimenting with them and picking out the perfect fonts for my projects.  Whether I'm printing labels, cards, or just plain old office documents, I always have to add a little touch of pizazz from my font collection.

Thanks to Amanda, my font library has grown tremendously and I just can't seem to get enough of them.  My computer is packed full of graphic goodies, and the best part is...they're all free!! She offers both scrapbooking and handwritten fonts and sketches, and the options will amaze you.

As if I wasn't happy enough about these fonts, I was even more thrilled to find out that Amanda made my handwriting into a font...{big smile}! My very own font??? It's a dream come true!! :)

Here's a little snapshot of my font...
Thanks for following me on my design journey...I hope you have a {bliss-filled} day, and I can't wait to connect again soon!

{blissful inspiration}

I decided to start a blog soon after my husband and I got married, and I was so excited about posting pictures, documenting our lives, and submitting our daily musings in our own little on-line spot.  I turned on my computer, logged in, and started the design process {which I thought would be a piece of cake}. It wasn't long before I stumbled upon the "Edit HTML" page, and that stopped me in my tracks.  I was scared just looking at all those codes, and I was tempted to give up altogether after seeing that knowledge of HTML and graphic design was a must.

I stared at the computer screen for a while, and then I started clicking around to see what I could find on blog design.  It sucked me right in, and I was hooked after about, oh, 10 minutes!  I couldn't stop researching, learning, and exploring everything having to do with graphic design, and working on my blog became my favorite hobby.

Luckily for me, I somehow stumbled upon Kevin & Amanda, and my journey toward blogging bliss began!!  I fell in love with every little aspect of Amanda's blog, and it quickly became one of my daily reads.  I have been inspired by Amanda's website, and every new post brings something fun, blissful, and delicious. Check out Amanda's site for all the good stuff...FoodPhotographyFashionFonts, and more!! Thank you, Amanda, for inspiring us everyday!!

I was always the "artsy" one in the family, but I had lost touch with my crafty side after graduating from college and starting a full time job.  All of this on-line inspiration has helped me focus on my creative side, and {after many long months of design dedication} my blog is born! Thanks to my new blog, I feel like I have my {artsy} groove back!!

I have loved utilizing my blog as a way to channel my wild creative energy, and I get excited every time I have a free moment to work on my designs. I hope you enjoy your time here, and let the blogging bliss begin!!
